How do I know if I have an STD?
You can't always tell if you have an STD. Sometimes you may not have any symptoms at all. If you think you may have something, if a guy told you he had something, or you just want to get checked out, look at our map and find a testing center near you.
If I test positive for something, will the doctor tell my parents or guardians?
Your health information is always kept between you and your health care providers. If you are over the age of 13 you have medical rights in Philadelphia. This means you can go and get tested and treated without your parents' permission.
Is every STD testable?
There is a test for every STD other than HPV in men. There are different tests health care providers use for certain STDs. Finding out you have HIV can be tough, but knowing is the first step toward a healthier you. Your testing counselor can help link you to a doctor who will take care of your diagnosis. What is the difference between HIV and AIDS?
AIDS is a serious illness caused by a virus called HIV. Not everyone with HIV has AIDS. If HIV is not treated, it can cause AIDS. AIDS is the stage of the infection that occurs when your immune system is badly damaged and you become more likely to get sick with opportunistic infections.
What is the window period?
From the moment HIV enters the body, it takes time for the immune system to develop a response to the infection. Part of the response are proteins called antibodies. The time period from when HIV enters the body to where there are enough antibodies to become detectable by an HIV test is called the window period. The length of the window period depends on the kind of test you are using.
Which STDs are curable?
Bacterial infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis are all curable. If you test positive or if your guy tests positive for one of these, you can receive medication that will clear the infection. However, you can get bacterial infections again! Read more about them here.
